Session open / close countdowns

Bar clocks show each city’s live local time. Green bars identify active sessions. The default timeline shows a rolling 24-hour window; a selected date shows that calendar day. Countdowns always show the live moment. The date selector changes the timeline and displayed schedule. Session times follow the local business-hour convention explained below; the weekly FX window is Sunday 17:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time. Holiday closures, daily broker breaks and instrument-specific hours are not included. Your device clock must be correct.

How to use the forex market hours tool

The clock answers three practical questions: which session is open now, when the next session begins, and when major centres overlap. Choose your timezone first. The tool detects your browser timezone automatically, but you can switch to UTC, London, New York or another listed location.

Each city shows an open/closed label and a live countdown to its next change. The daily bars show the selected date in your chosen timezone. A white marker identifies the current time when today is selected. Use the date control to compare future session schedules around daylight-saving changes, then press Today to return to the current day.

The overlap row highlights the shared London and New York window. This is a time-planning tool, not a live price feed or an automatic buy/sell signal.

Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York session times

Forex is decentralised, so there is no single exchange bell defining every session. This clock uses the following transparent local-hour convention. Different brokers and educational calendars may choose slightly different boundaries.

SessionLocal business hoursTime zoneClock changes
Sydney08:00–17:00Australia/SydneyAEST / AEDT
Tokyo09:00–18:00Asia/TokyoJST; no seasonal shift
London08:00–17:00Europe/LondonGMT / BST
New York08:00–17:00America/New_YorkEST / EDT

The session windows are clipped to the general Forex trading week. An active city does not prove that a particular broker, contract or CFD is currently tradable. Check your platform’s instrument specification for its exact hours.

Why daylight saving changes the session overlap

London, New York and Sydney change clocks on different dates. Tokyo stays on Japan Standard Time. A schedule copied as fixed UTC offsets can therefore be wrong for part of the year, especially during the weeks when the US and UK move their clocks on different weekends.

This calculator uses named IANA timezones through the browser’s Intl date-time engine. It converts each city’s local opening and closing time for the selected date rather than permanently adding a fixed number of hours. Keep your browser and operating system updated so their timezone rules remain current.

The date selector is useful before a seasonal change: compare two Mondays and watch how the local opening times and London–New York overlap change in your own zone.

Which session should you watch for your market?

EURUSD and GBPUSD

The London session and its New York overlap are useful periods to monitor European and US participation. Match the time window to scheduled announcements, current volatility and your tested setup. An active session can still be choppy.

Gold and silver

XAUUSD and XAGUSD traders often follow London and US trading activity alongside dollar and Treasury-market developments. Metals can have broker-specific daily breaks. The Forex clock does not replace a Gold trading-hours schedule or the economic calendar.

JPY pairs and Asia-Pacific markets

Tokyo hours can help organise a watchlist of yen pairs, while Sydney can be relevant to Australian-dollar news. Central-bank announcements may occur outside the main session window. Currency-specific events matter as much as the city label.

Bitcoin and crypto

Crypto spot markets generally operate around the clock, including weekends. Forex sessions are a way to observe regional participation, not a rule that Bitcoin closes with New York. Exchange maintenance and derivative-contract hours can still affect availability.

Oil and energy

Oil has its own futures and CFD schedules, contract breaks and inventory releases. Use the clock for regional context, then confirm the exact energy contract’s trading hours.

London–New York overlap: activity is not an entry signal

When two major centres operate together, participation and trading activity can increase. That may create more opportunities for a tested strategy, but it can also bring faster reversals and event-driven volatility. A busy window does not guarantee a trend, low costs or a winning trade.

  • Check the economic calendar for releases affecting your instrument.
  • Identify the session high, low and key structure before deciding on an entry.
  • Check the current spread and available liquidity rather than assuming typical conditions.
  • Define the invalidation level and size the position from your own risk budget.
  • Compare the outcome with your trading journal across enough sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Which forex session is open right now?

The live status and city cards at the top show the sessions currently active under this tool’s stated local-hour convention. Check the weekly-market label as well, especially on weekends.

Does the clock show my local time?

Yes. The browser timezone is selected initially. You can change it with the timezone selector; the bars, schedule and overlap update together.

Why do opening times differ from another session clock?

Providers may use different local business-hour conventions, broker times or fixed offsets. This page explicitly lists its chosen hours and adjusts named timezones for daylight saving.

Can I trade Forex on Saturday?

The general retail Forex week is closed on Saturday. Some broker OTC products and crypto markets operate on different schedules; those are not equivalent to the weekday interbank FX session.

Is Gold open whenever the Forex session is open?

Not necessarily. Gold CFDs and futures have instrument-specific schedules and maintenance breaks. Confirm the hours for your exact symbol and broker.

Are holiday closures included?

No. The tool models recurring session windows and the general weekly FX boundary. It does not maintain an exchange, bank-holiday or broker-maintenance calendar.

Do I need to register or install anything?

No. The session calculator runs in your browser. It does not require your trading-account login, broker password or account balance.
