US Economic News: Confidence Hits 91.7, Home Sales Beat Forecast, Richmond Holds at −2

Market commentary

US macro news brief · 27 October 2026 · Official release results checked against The Conference Board, the US Census Bureau and the Richmond Fed. The main scheduled release window was 10:00 a.m. New York / 14:00 UTC / 7:00 p.m. Pakistan time.

The headline: US consumer confidence recovered and new-home sales exceeded the calendar forecast, while the Richmond manufacturing index remained negative. Together, these releases show a mixed economic picture—not a uniform acceleration across households, housing and factories.

*Forecasts are from the economic-calendar snapshot supplied to SS7TRADER for this brief; consensus estimates can differ between providers. Actual readings and revised prior values are checked against the official releases linked below. Home sales are a seasonally adjusted annual rate, not the number of houses sold during September alone.

Consumer confidence rebounds, but the recovery has limits

The Conference Board reported an October confidence reading of 91.7, up 7.5 points from a revised September level of 84.2. It was also substantially stronger than the 81.2 forecast in the supplied calendar. The Present Situation Index rose to 120.4, while the Expectations Index improved to 72.6.

The improvement is encouraging, but it does not erase the earlier weakening trend. The release also described plans for lower spending on services and durable goods over the coming six months, with elevated prices continuing to weigh on purchasing power. Traders should distinguish a better survey reading from confirmed growth in actual spending. Read The Conference Board’s release ↗

New-home sales beat the estimate while edging below August

September sales of new single-family homes ran at a 676,000 annualized pace. That is 25,000 above the 651,000 calendar forecast, but 4,000 below the revised August pace of 680,000. A positive surprise versus expectations can therefore coexist with a small month-to-month decline.

The Census Bureau estimated sales were 0.6% lower than August and 5.3% below September 2025. Both changes carried wide uncertainty ranges that included zero, so they should not be treated as statistically established declines. The report put available supply at 8.4 months and the median new-home sales price at $400,400. Read the Census Bureau’s release ↗

Richmond manufacturing stays at −2

The Richmond Fed’s October composite manufacturing index was unchanged at −2, below the zero forecast in the supplied calendar. New orders weakened to −8 and employment eased to 3, while shipments improved to zero.

This is a regional survey of the Fifth District, not a nationwide manufacturing total. Its details help explain why stronger household sentiment should not be read as evidence that every part of the economy is improving. Read the Richmond Fed’s survey ↗

What this may mean for the dollar, Gold and Forex

SS7TRADER interpretation: the confidence surprise and better-than-expected housing reading could support the dollar if traders interpret them as signs of resilience. That case would be more convincing if US Treasury yields and the dollar also strengthened. A stronger dollar and rising real yields can create a headwind for Gold, but that relationship is not reliable on every release.

The softer manufacturing picture provides a counterweight. If yields fail to rise, or markets focus on weak orders and spending intentions, the initial dollar-supportive interpretation could fade. EUR/USD and GBP/USD traders should compare the US news with developments affecting the other currency in each pair.

These are conditional transmission channels, not a report of a verified post-release market move. This brief does not claim that Gold, the dollar or any currency pair has already moved by a particular amount. It also does not provide an entry price, target or stop loss.

A practical post-release checklist

  • Check whether the initial price move holds after the release candle closes.
  • Compare the dollar’s direction with Treasury yields rather than relying on a green or red calendar number alone.
  • Recheck spreads and liquidity before acting; a late entry can change the trade’s risk.
  • Use your chart’s structure and invalidation level. A data surprise by itself is not a complete setup.
